The University aptly draws its name from William Carey, a Christian missionary who came to India in 1793 and settled in the Danish colony of Serampore, near Calcutta. The story of Carey is an amazing account of a man who started as an ordinary shoemaker in England and made an extraordinary influence in India. Though not formally educated, he became a keen linguist and mastered numerous Indian languages. In 1808 he printed the whole New Testament in Sanskrit and by 1937 he and his helpers had translated portions of the Bible into 44 languages. Started over 100 schools and started the first ever school for girls. He started the first college for higher education in India and caused the establishment of the first Saving Bank in India. He introduced the steam engine to India and encouraged the Indian blacksmith to make copies of the engine. His linguistic ability gained him a 30-year Professorship of Bengali and Sanskrit languages in Calcutta, showing his Indian contemporaries that prose could be as effective a medium as poetry.

In 1818, Carey and his colleagues began the publication of the “Friend of India”, and English newspaper that provided the foundation for Calcutta’s “Statesman”, distributed all over India today. In 1820 he founded the Botanical Society also known as the Agri-Horticultural Society of India. Carey successfully pioneered efforts against social practices such as infanticide and sati. Along with his colleagues in the famous Serampore Trio –Joshua Marshman and William Ward, and with the support of the Hindu reformer Raja ram Mohan Roy, he was responsible for Sati being banned in 1829.

William Carey’s life has been an education without which a Christian is incomplete. His Christian commitment, initiative, vision, relentless labor, resolve and perseverance are qualities worth imitating. He showed us what a Christian can achieve in his small life. He has raised the bar of Christian living making us to reflect ‘where we stand’.

In 1818 he founded the Serampore College to provide education in arts and sciences and the institution continues even today. The king of Denmark granted a royal charter in 1827 making the College a degree granting institution, the first in Asia. Many schools were started for the poorer section. William Carey University is the first University in India named after this outstanding pioneer educator.

Known affectionately as the “father of modern missions”, William Carey’s guiding motto was, “Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God”.

William Carey University was established by an Act passed by Meghalaya Assembly and published vide the Gazette of Meghalaya No.76. Shillong, July 2005. Due to initial financial constraint and global financial crisis, it was not immediately possible to appoint full time teaching faculty. The course was run on modular basis with teachers coming from Bangalore, Madurai, U.K., Australia and Shillong on a part-time basis. Our experience in the first year was that students in Northeast India were not familiar with the modular system, and the course was eventually shifted back to regular University system.

The first year final examinations were conducted in the month of June, 2009. Eight students appeared in the examinations. However, two students did not continue for the second year. We therefore, had only six students continuing in the second year. During 2009. All the courses having been completed in time, the final examinations were conducted during June 21, 2010- July 7, 2010. The first batch of 6 students also completed their project report which qualified them for the MA Degree.

The Board of Governors:

The Board of Governors met recently on 20 September 2011 and resolved that William Carey University will continue to offer programmes under the following five schools:

  1. School of Environmental Management
  2. School of Continuing Education
  3. School of Development Management
  4. School of Social Sciences
  5. School of Information Technology

Chancellor’s Report to the Board of Governors
Prof. Ken Gnanakan, Chancellor of WCU underlined that the university is a postgraduate professional institution, and therefore only professional degrees will be offered. The degrees are in effect “two edged” - a direct commercial edge even for a degree such as Masters in Environmental Management, yet an overt “development” angle. The programmes will develop the communities and their resources to bring about much needed environmental protection and community socio-economic development.

The second aspect of WCU’s strategy is to explore a job potential and create jobs for graduates. It is one thing to have a programme names “Diploma in Aqua-culture” but if this does not lead to an available career the student is left hanging high and low! Deliberate steps must be taken. With this in mind WCU has entered into a partnership with Grace City- a Meghalaya based commercial operation. Plans for various commercial activities are in progress. There will be a huge job potential that will absorb a large number of our graduates.

Strategic Partnership with Grace City
WCU/ACTS Group and Grace City have entered into a Strategic Partnership which will allow mutual as well as individual growth in pursuing their objectives of growth in Meghalaya. This partnership will focus on branding, promotion, and marketing, relationships with Government and Non-/Government agencies, business and commercial groups anywhere in the world. While education at a broad level ranging from community and primary education to university level will be pursued commonly, other areas will be agreed upon from time to time with specific memoranda of understanding signed for each project. The three projects to be finalized at present are: - Food production which includes fish farming, vegetable and fruit growing; Real estate development; and Health services.

Within this strategic partnership, WCU is negotiating business ventures in aqua and agro business with APEX ENCON Projects and Life Line Pvt. Limited are.

UGC Recognition
WCU is progressing towards UGC recognition with its faculty enrollment programme and the campus development in Umsning. Library development will also be speeded up once we have our campus ready. We have affirmed the need for this recognition and making all efforts before our application is made.

Meanwhile, we are finalizing two programmes to be offered in collaboration with recognized Indian UGC recognized Universities: PG Diploma in Integrated Education with Andhra University and the Masters in Environmental Management with Kalyani University.

Budget and Audited Statements
The Board of Governors received audited statement of accounts, and approved the budget as attached.
