On the 17th of October 2011, which was the 1st day of the Orientation Program, Dr. Soma Bhowmick, the Research Coordinator welcomed the
IRP scholars to the Orientation Program and mentioned briefly about the criticalities of Research in Social Sciences and its importance to human lives and
civilization. She encouraged them to think out of the box and look for areas of research that would be both interesting, important for the society and would
also be breaking some new grounds.

For the IRP Scholars it was a very encouraging round of interaction with Mr. Archie Kharpuri, Mr. Zufli Ali, both Directors, Grace City and
Dr. D. Shullai, Asst. Registrar, they encouraged the scholars to make research work interesting by looking and working towards establishing linkages between
business

and academics. Besides providing theoretical and academic dimensions to their research areas that they would be embarking upon, the scholars were egged
on also to look for their do-ability, economic viability and make them contextually relevant for Meghalaya.

Mr. Ali provided opulent insights into various aspects of research areas and what to look for in each of the areas chosen by the research
scholars at the end of the Orientation Program. This contribution was extremely relevant and valuable.
Over a period of two days, 17th and 18th of October 2011, Dr. Roshmi Das, Dr. M. Shimray, Dr. Maitreyee Roy, all Asst. Professors and
Dr. Soma Bhowmick, Asst. Professor and Research Coordinator engaged with the scholars in important roles of Resource Persons during the Orientation Program
and facilitated fundamentally important sessions on
- Identification of Research Problem & Processes of Building up Research/Projects Proposals and Synopsis.
- Fundamentals of Data presentations, analysis and interpretations.
- Engagement with Communities, Corporatism, NGOs and Government Agencies.
- Formulation of Research Objectives and Review of Literature, Importance and Relevance of Research Techniques.
- Methods in Field Work, Sampling, Questionnaires.
- Report/ Thesis Writing/Documentation and Communication of Research Results.
- Research Design, Its Theoretical and Conceptual Framework.
- Use of Information Communication and Technology in Social Science Research Activities.
- Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA): Skill Development.
- Developing Case Studies.

On day two, WCU, PhD candidate Mr. Reestom G. M. Sohkia joined in the orientation.

The purpose of these field trips was to acquaint the IRP Scholars to get in touch with various groups and communities, their research work
is intended to be close to people’s lives and be contextual.

Day 5: Fresh and rejuvenated from their field trips the scholars reassembled again for the final day of the orientation programs and as
green horns made impressive presentations on their experiences during the by-gone four days. They came up with details of their experiences and perceptions and
zeroed on their areas of research interests.

Feedback was elicited about the overall management of the Orientation Program from the scholars.
Rating Scale of Performance:
67% of the participants rated the performance level as “excellent”. 17% and 16% rated it as “good” and “very good” respectively.
Assessment of Content:
Assessment of the Content components has been a mixed response ranging from 7% for Field Trips to General Impression, Structure, Amount
and Relevancy being allocated 14% each. 12% for Quality and Clarity and 13% for Content.
Assessment of the Format components was very balanced 25% rating has been awarded to each of them v.i.z. Locations, Satisfaction level
regards the Format of the Program, Level of Interaction with the Resource Persons and the Handouts provided to the scholars.
Assessment of Format:
All logistical arrangements including food were ensured by Dr. Darilang Shullai, Asst. Registrar, Ms. Dalamon, Mr. Phunwell,
Mr. Steven and Kong.
Dr. Soma Bhowmick was responsible for overall coordination and management of the Orientation Program.

At the end of the five day program Dr. Soma Bhowmick, Research Coordinator, thanked the scholars for whole heartedly participating in
the program and attributed its success and do-ability to all the Resource Persons. A special mention was made for the Grace City-William Carey University Team
in Shillong led by Dr. Paul Mohan Raj, Acting Vice Chancellor for providing leadership, guidance and trust that such an orientation program was held with
success.
